Where have all the GOOD Writer's Gone???
By: S. Bitch
I have been writing fiction since I was 9, 10 years old back in the early part of the 90's, but it wasn't until 1998 when Fan Fiction started soaring. That was the year that all the boybands, pop princesses, alternative bands, and the "teeny-bop" movies hit the scene. It seemed like the music and movie fandom went to an all time new level. Fan fiction has been around for quite some time but to me, 1998-2003 are known as "The Golden Fanfic Years".
I mean take a good look at what and who we had. In music, we had 'Nsync, Backstreet Boys (even though they were out a while before 1998), Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, B2K, Blink-182, No Doubt, and Green Day (Blink, ND, and Green, too, were around for a while). And in movies, we had actors/actresses such as Elijah Wood, Tara Reid, Sarah Michelle Gellager, Orlando Bloom, Ryan Phillipe, Jared Padelecki, HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN (yum), and others. I mean, who in their right mind didn't want to write fantasies about these people??
There wasn't a fan site on the freakin' web that you couldn't find a section for Fan Fiction! It was crazy! But....dun dun dun....
As SOON as the summer of 2003 hit....
that's when it all went down. Harry Potter burst onto the scene a year or two before and the giggling, twitty little "teenies" (younger than "teenie boppers") came roaring out, pushing us more skilled and realistic authors out of the way! Now, I'm not saying that there aren't any young, talented writers out there, because there are, but....
It was like when Japan invaded Korea, making them slaves and forcing them to read and write Japanese. The "Teen-apanese" invaded Ko-writa' and forced us to read their giggling stories and made us write like them!
Then came the craze with Anne Rice and others making what little FF sites we did have to close because they didn't want us writing about their characters, saying that THEY have the rights to their characters and stories and not US.
But, writers....
don't we have rights too??!! It's a free country for the most part and a free world for the most part. When did they make a law stating that Writers could not write stories based upon books and actors and actresses?? It's upsetting and down right unfair!
Now, there are only a select few GOOD sites that allow fan fiction. REAL fan fiction. Something other than what I like to call, "The Aimee's". Aimee fan fiction is kind of like Mary Sue's...but more stupid and childish.
These are the dreadful stories that give us GOOD writers a bad name!
These are the stories that are unrealistic and annoying.
These are the stories that are like "Oooooooooh, I saw Elijah Wood at the movies and he was looking at me and I was like whatever and he came up to me and we fell in love and had sex last night and now I'm like 2 months pregnant with his child! Ehhhhhhhhhhh"
These stories (points to the above statement) are the reason the GOOD authors/writers went into hidding. We stopped our wrtiting beause we were being made a mockery of and the whole Fan Fic Writing became a huge, Teeny Bopper joke. And I ask you again....
WHERE have all the GOOD Writers GONE???
