Types of Fiction
Celebrity Fiction/Real Life Fiction
Celebrity Fan Fiction/Real Life Fiction, also known as RLF, is written about real people in real life situations. This INCLUDES Music/Band fan-fiction These people can include actors, actresses, muscians, directors, etc. An example is an author writing about the actor Hayden Christensen struggling with a friend's drug addiction. Hayden Christensen is written as, HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN the ACTOR in his life as we know it. Past, present or future story lines are acceptable.
Cast Fiction
Cast Fiction, also known as CF, are original stories by the author in which the story is "cast" or "pre-cast" with real life people such as actors, actresses, etc. for an imagery of those characters for the reader. The characters take on the general appearance and voice of the person cast to "play" the part of the characters. This relates to if they were acting in a movie or a television show. Keep in mind that while the author may use the face of a celebrity for the character, the character is in NO WAY representing the life of that celebrity. Also, THIS IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH CELEBRITY FICTION/REAL LIFE FICTION.
Cross-Over Fiction
Also called COF, Crossover Fan Fiction is when an author takes characters from one story and cross them over to another story. For instance, Buffy the Vampire Slayer moving from Sunddydale and crossing over to the Angel Series in L.A. to fight Vampires, Star Wars Jedi flying across the Galaxy and crossing over to the Harry Potter universe to fight evil Warlocks and so on. While the crossover story is extremely popular amongst fan fiction writers, it does sometimes occur in "canon" (non-fan fiction) works.
Alternative Reality Fiction
Alternative Reality Fiction (sometimes called an "Über-fic") is a form of Alternate Universe story where the characters are completely removed from normal world and given a new or different background or image to fit them into a whole new world. An example would be stories featuring Captain Kirk living and working in New York City in 2006 or in the Star Wars or Harry Potter settings. Though slightly different, these characters usually retain their names, appearance, personality and often their social standing, but are integrated into another fandom. No mention has to be made of their origins, except perhaps as a form of dramatic irony.
Alternative Universe Fiction
Alternative Universe, related to Alternative Reality, is a story where changes to the original storyline take place. An example would be an author taking the story of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and making it where Anakin Skywalker dies instead of Senator Padme Amidala.OR making it so Anakin does not turn to the Dark Side and become a Sith Lord. In AU, the author may also change the original setting of the story. For example, instead of Buffy the Vampire taking place in Sunnydale, it takes place in London, England.
Original Fiction
Original Fiction is just what it says. Fiction in which all characters, their likeness and personality as well as names etc... stem from the author. Original fictions are the SOLE property of the author and are of their own personal creative genius. You will not find stories based on any one particular in this type of fiction.
RPG Fiction
RPG Fan Fiction is pretty simple really, but first, you must know what it is. RPG, also known as Role Playing Games, is a form of game on a website, a board, or software where you can play out certain characters. For example: Yu-Gi-Oh, Doom, Dragonball Z, Star Wars, Star Trek, Pokeman, Celebrity, and so on. In THIS case, you would be using CAST or Original characters from an RPG, other characters would push the fiction into a different catagory ie: AU, AR, Celebrity etc... RPG Fan Fiction is fiction solely based upon the RPG characters you play. Bottom line: you are taking a character's or group of characters storyline in the game and writing it in a more in depth form of a story or fiction. Also the characters "past" may be developed via this medium. *PLEASE NOTE* RPG characters are the result of a persons personal passion and they some times take years to develop. PLEASE if you are writing about characters OTHER than your own, ask permission first, as unlike films, RPG is an on going story and fan fiction could interfere with a preset story line.
